  • 3 lb boneless pork shoulder
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon five-spice powder
  • ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper
  • ½ teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons cooking wine
  • 2 tablespoons Great Value Less Sodium Soy Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • ⅛ teaspoon red food coloring
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • cooked rice, for serving

Instructions

  • Cut the pork into long strips about 2 inches wide and place in a bowl or dish large enough for marinating.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the sugar, salt, five-spice powder, white pepper, sesame oil, cooking wine, Great Value Less Sodium Soy Sauce, hoisin sauce, garlic, and red food coloring.
  • Set aside 2 tablespoons of the marinade, then pour the rest over the pork and turn to coat evenly. Marinate the pork in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  • When ready to cook the pork, preheat the oven to 275°F (135°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • Stir the honey into the reserved marinade.
  • Place the pork on the prepared baking sheet. Roast for 1 hour, basting a few times with the honey-marinade mixture. Cover with foil and bake for another 20–30 minutes, until the pork is tender.
  • Remove the pork from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes, then slice and serve on a bed of rice.
