  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup milk, room temperature
  • 2 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened, plus more for greasing
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 lemon, zested
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 cup Great Value Apple Butter
  • 2 medium apples, peeled and thinly sliced

Instructions

  • Make the dough starter: In a small bowl, mix together the flour, milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 15 minutes, or until bubbly.
  • Make the dough: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook, combine the flour, milk, butter, egg, lemon zest, salt, and the dough starter. Mix on medium-low speed for 6–8 minutes, or until the dough is smooth. It will still be somewhat sticky.
  • Transfer the dough to a large bowl greased with butter and cover. Let rise for 1½–2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • While the dough is rising, make the topping: In a small bowl, combine the sugar, flour, butter, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice. Stir until the mixture comes together in small crumbles.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a baking mat.
  • Once the dough has risen, turn it out onto a floured surface. Cut into approximately 22 golf ball-sized pieces. Shape each piece of dough into a round bun, then place on the prepared baking sheet. Let rise for about 30 minutes, or until puffy.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Once the kolaches have risen, use your fingers to create a small indent in the center of each piece of dough. Fill each kolache with about 2 teaspoons of Great Value Apple Butter, then place a small fan of apple slices on top and sprinkle with the crumble topping.
  • Bake the kolaches for 20–22 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
