Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10-inch Bundt pan.
In a large bowl, cream sugar and shortening until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Add to shortening mixture and beat until combined. Mix in buttermilk and vanilla. Pour batter into the prepared Bundt pan.
Bake in the preheated oven until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 1 hour.
